EDUCATION PROGRAM.
After the loss of the national education system
and all other state run social services providing
institutions during Somali civil strife which
broke out in the early 1990s a whole generation
faced black future because of lack of formal
education. A handful of privately owned schools
tried to fill the gap but to no avail as a very
few number of students afford to attend these
schools due to the school fees that most of the
Somali families cannot pay. This has led too many
children at schooling age to take recourse to
streets as street children taking to bad habits
such as Qat chewing and later on hooliganism. In
an effort to do something about this problem OSPAD
felt that it was prudent to establish education
centers to accommodate orphans and other children
from low income families in education. OSPAD
has opened 5 formal schools for primary and
intermediate education in Banadir and lower
Shabelle regions. The result was encouraging; the
five schools have so far seen the graduation of
more 2500 students into the secondary education
level who are now pursuing their studies at
different secondary schools in the two said
regions.
On
the other hand, OSPAD established 4 non formal
education centers on literacy development purposes
which were targeting vulnerable parts of the
community like street children from IDPS, and
children from destitute families who missed the
primary or basic studies. This gave non formal
education apportunities to hundreds of students
belonging to above mentioned groups of the
communities and resulted in positive impact in
supporting the vulnerable groups in the
geographical areas of OSPAD
especially
BANADIR and lower SHABELE regions, more than 1500
students have learnt primary alternative education
equivalent to standard eight of the basic
education.
While More than 1500
children from those specific communities have been
enabled to write and read efficiently equipping
them with basic civic ideas relevant to their
level and age.
