Street
Child Welfare Implemented
by OSPAD
The most painful hardships in the period of
statelessness were inflected on the Somali
children who missed all the necessary human care
and support that every child had a right to. They
became neglected or victims of all violations that
took place in the country. They did not
unfortunately get any primary care and support
including feeding, health, and protection support
and so on. This had directed them to be street
children, shoe shiners, garbage collectors,
victims of severe exploitations, glue snifters or
snatchers. In this way they became an intolerable
burden on their societies. They also suffer at the
hands of cruel members of the society receiving
unbearable treatment from them such as killing,
rape, robbery, exploitation, torturing and so on.
OSPAD, having seen the plight of the Somali
children in its operation areas, had realized that
it was awfully important to act quickly to
intervene this tragedy and swiftly implemented
street child care program that was composed of
feeding, education and health support service
including documentation and advocacy.
And from that point OSPAD
has collected more than one hundred street
children from the Mogadishu public streets and
commenced the provision of the services. How ever
that program becomes relevant regarding the
situation of the above type of Somali children.
Although the financial capacity of OSPAD to that
humanitarian intervention was limited it is coping
a lot about the care and support in benefiting
these children.
And OSPAD is very happy with
the continuation of this street child care program
which so far resulted in positive result as many
neglected children in the street now have care
program like feeding, education, and some sorts of
health service whilst many of them have been
referred to their original families after
rehabilitation and now live normal lives with
their parents.
